treadsoftly
Full many a glorious morning have I seen
Flatter the mountain-tops with sovereign eye,
Kissing with golden face the meadows green,
Gilding pale streams with heavenly alchemy

What we're about

Treadsoftly is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to encouraging minimal impact good practice among walkers and others enjoying the countryside, hills and mountains to help conserve fragile landscapes.

OUR MESSAGE

As we enjoy the outdoors we inevitably cause some damage. Let's try to keep that impact to a minimum. We're not party-poopers and we're not wagging fingers, but erosion and environmental degradation are not someone else's problems, they are ours. We can be part of the solution by thinking hard about where, when and how we do our thing. Let's enjoy and celebrate the outdoors but also consider the future, not merely exploit natural beauty and wild places.

POSITION STATEMENT

  • Treadsoftly urges all walkers and others enjoying outdoor activities to recognise their impact on the environment and to make every effort to limit it.

  • We emphasise that individual attitudes and conduct towards the environment, other users, and land managers and owners, are vitally important. Individuals recognising their responsibilities and duties can have a very significant effect. To that end we promote an ethic of personal responsibility and conservation values among outdoor activists. We argue that those enjoying the outdoors should regard themselves as being guardians of that environment as well as consumers of it.

  • Treadsoftly offers practical, nitty-gritty advice for individuals and groups to minimise impact in the outdoors. We also engage in a broader discussion to provoke more thought and action to protect fragile environments and to respect and conserve wild places and natural beauty. We are open to new ideas and perspectives and welcome comment and contributions from others.

  • Towards our aim of conserving fragile landscapes we support moves to widen and ease access for walking and quiet enjoyment, while working to increase the profile and recognition of visitors' responsibilities to protect the landscapes they enjoy. We believe that the greater the opportunities to access the land, the better the chance to 'spread the load' of impact.

  • We support the development of sustainable 'green tourism' and other rural developments for the benefit of local communities as well as visitors, where they are appropriate.
